GREENPORT, NY, April 16, 2024 - The Eastern Long Island Hospital Foundation (ELHF) dedicated its new Emergency Room Ambulance Ramp Entrance in memory of Hon. Helen J. Rosenblum on Tuesday, April 8, 2024, on what would have been Ms. Rosenblum’s 79th birthday. The modification project was generously donated by Hon. Edward J. Boyd, Esq.
Ms. Rosenblum, a graduate of Skidmore College and Fordham University School of Law, served for many years as Town Attorney for the Town of Shelter Island before being elected as Town Justice. She was well known and highly regarded for her untiring efforts to better the lives of all that she encountered, regardless of whether they were two-legged or four-legged. Her love of people and of animals serve as an inspiration for all of us.
Speaking about Mr. Boyd, Paul J. Connor, Chief Administrative Officer at Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital (SBELIH), said: "This truly reflects your strong commitment to the EMS community. Your leadership is vital in addressing the challenges faced by emergency medical services. Your consistent encouragement of volunteers to participate in our events and forums is greatly appreciated. We're thankful for your dedication to our hospital and your advocacy for SBELIH. Without your generosity, our ambulance entrance dock wouldn't be as accessible to various rigs. Thank you for your contributions to our community and to EMS."
A graduate of The Lawrenceville School, Lafayette College and Boston University School of Law, Mr. Boyd came to the North Fork in 1974 after serving as a criminal trial attorney with the US Department of Justice in Washington, D.C., and as Chief of the Criminal Division in the US Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York in Brooklyn. On the North Fork, Mr. Boyd spent 17 years as Village Justice for the Village of Greenport while working as an Instructor of Judicial Practices in the NYS Office of Court Administration. Mr. Boyd is a 44-year member of the Southold Fire Department where he has served as Chief, a former Chairman of Suffolk Regional Emergency Medical Services Council (REMSCO), a past President of the Southold Town Fire Chiefs Council, and is currently President of the North Fork Rescue Squad Association and is Vice Chairman of Suffolk (REMSCO).
“This dedication is in memory of Helen Rosenblum,” explained Mr. Boyd. “Helen was a very dedicated person who always put the interests and needs of other people ahead of herself. I think that it's only appropriate that this revamped ambulance entrance is in her memory. She was an EMT-CC and Assistant Chief of the Shelter Island Red Cross Ambulance. She participated in a lot of calls and was part of the county-wide EMS system. She was a member of the Suffolk (REMSCO) and Suffolk Regional Emergency Medical Advisory Committee (REMAC) which are the advisory committees for all of the fabulous work that goes on in Suffolk County which is close to 200,000 calls a year. It was a lot of work, and she was very dedicated. I'm sure on a beautiful day like this, which is also her birthday, she would be very pleased to see all of you here to acknowledge what we've done. It’s our pleasure and I hope that everyone uses this ramp in good health.”
