The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) provide significant privacy protections for the health information of patients and research participants called protected health information (PHI). At Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital (SBELIH), we are dedicated to scientific discovery, education and patient care. Paramount to this mission is patient privacy and patient trust.

The SBELIH Privacy Office led by the Chief HIPAA Privacy Officer operates a robust privacy program in compliance with HIPAA, HITECH and other laws and best practices and includes extensive policies and procedures, training and education, monitoring and auditing and conducting investigations when privacy concerns are raised. We comply with all requirements under state and federal laws and offer a number of ways to communicate concerns to the privacy office and Chief HIPAA Privacy Officer.

We believe it is crucial that health care professionals have a strong commitment to patient privacy which builds patient trust and in turn improves quality of care.  At SBELIH this commitment is vital to the realization of our mission. We invite staff to use this website as a resource for answers to HIPAA questions, to keep you apprised of the latest regulatory developments and offer convenient tools to enhance HIPAA compliance at SBUH.
