SBELIH Debuts Enhanced Emergency Room Nursing Station

GREENPORT, NY, December 2, 2024 – The Eastern Long Island Hospital Foundation (ELIHF) is proud to announce the completion of the Emergency Room Nursing Station enhancement at Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital (SBELIH) on Thursday, November 21, 2024.  The ribbon-cutting ceremony was attended by members of The Brennan Family Foundation and SBELIH staff to celebrate the expansion of this newly upgraded nursing station, designed to streamline emergency services, empowering SBELIH’s dedicated nursing team to deliver care with even greater efficiency and effectiveness.

The Emergency Department remains a cornerstone of care for the community, providing critical services when they are needed most. During his remarks, Paul J. Connor, III, Chief Administrative Officer of SBELIH, discussed the steps being taken for SBELIH to become designated as a Primary Stroke Center and highlighted the Emergency Department's vital role in the community: “Through our Emergency Department, we statistically see almost half of the population of the North Fork and Shelter Island.”

Thanks to the generosity of The Brennan Family Foundation, the expansion and modernization of the ER has significantly enhanced patient care and reduced response times during urgent situations. This transformative investment reflects the Foundation’s enduring dedication to the health and safety of the region.

The Brennan Family and The Brennan Family Foundation have been steadfast supporters of SBELIH since 1987, when the hospital was known as Eastern Long Island Hospital. Over the years, their generous contributions as grateful patients have strengthened both the hospital and the community it serves.

At the reception, Donald Brennan expressed the family’s deep connection to the hospital, stating, “We collectively feel that it’s very important this community hospital exists, especially in the emergency capacity, which will now be able to manage stroke patients. I’ve always thought of SBELIH as a home, and the staff here meets the definition of compassionate. We want to be supportive, and the focus is on the ER.”

Patricia Brennan said simply, “Whatever you’re doing, you’re doing it right. I don’t know where we would be without this hospital.”

Eileen Oakley, former Assistant Vice-Chair of the Eastern Long Island Hospital Foundation (ELIHF) and head of The Brennan Family Foundation, shared her perspective: “My work on the Foundation Board increased my family’s awareness of what goes on in this hospital and where the need is. Knowing we’ll have a new stroke protocol in place is especially meaningful to me, as our family, and this community, is aging and the potential of a stroke becomes an increasing reality. This hospital is part of a great community—I know the faces here, and they know me. I’m proud to continue supporting the hospital. I like what you do, and I want you to keep doing it.”

This Emergency Room Nursing Station Enhancement underscores SBELIH’s unwavering commitment to delivering the highest standard of care to every patient who enters our ER, ensuring the community continues to benefit from exceptional, lifesaving treatment.
