Coronavirus Update – May 15, 2020

From the Desk of Paul J. Connor III, Chief Administrative Officer

Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital (SBELIH) has served the North Fork and Shelter Island for over 115 years, and we remain committed to your health and safety, now more than ever.

While every member of our community is adjusting to a "new normal," we are doing the same at SBELIH. We understand your potential concerns about visiting the hospital during a global pandemic. Every one of our healthcare heroes is so much more than their job— they are parents, siblings, children, and caregivers, all of whom can relate to the hesitation you might be feeling right now.

Please rest assured that we have taken every precaution to ensure that our facility remains a safe environment for all patients and all staff. Prior to the outbreak, we were prepared for the worst. During the height of the virus, we succeeded in keeping all of our patients safe, with or without COVID-19.

While we encourage you to continue practices such as social distancing and proper hand hygiene to maintain your health, we also encourage you to look beyond the here and now of COVID-19 and return to caring for you and your family’s specific healthcare needs. Our dedicated staff remains hard at work and ready to serve you.

Our Emergency Department remains open 24/7 to safely treat your urgent healthcare needs. We are also here to provide you with preventive screenings that you may have been putting off in response to COVID-19. Prevention is powerful medicine, especially when we’re all making every effort possible to maintain our health.

We appear to be on a decreased curve, with only admitted one COVID+ patient since April 30.

Plans are underway to safely resume elective surgeries.

As you may know, facilities are required to meet specific measures to move forward with these procedures, and we are proud to announce that SBELIH meets all of these qualifying metrics. We recognize the importance of these services for your health, and we are eager to serve your elective healthcare needs safely.

We are taking appointments for our outpatient services including:

  • Mammography
  • Bone Densitometry
  • CAT Scan
  • Ultrasound
  • Laboratory Services

Inpatient services have been reopened, including:

  • Quannacut Detoxification Unit
  • Quannacut Rehabilitation Unit

We are confident in our hospital’s ability to keep you safe and provide you with the high quality of care you’ve grown to expect from SBELIH. While we remain dedicated to winning the battle against coronavirus, we are just as committed to being your go-to resource for your full range of healthcare needs.

We will get through this trying time the same way we came into it: together.

Sincerely,

Paul J. Connor III
