Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital and CAST Partner to Launch Food as Medicine Program
Greenport, NY, June XX, 2023 -- Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital (SBELIH) has partnered with the Center for Advocacy, Support and Transformation (CAST) to launch a new Food as Medicine program.
The Food as Medicine program addresses each patient’s individual needs and provides those with food insecurity with a tote bag of food upon discharge, as well as community-based resources for food assistance. Patients who are residents of Southold Town will be given access to CAST’s expansive food pantry.
“We are proud to collaborate with CAST on this initiative,” said Paul J. Connor, Chief Administrative Officer at SBELIH. “Issues such as food insecurity can hinder a patient’s recovery, and this will ensure that patients discharged from our hospital are leaving with the necessary resources.”
“CAST is excited to be able to help patients of SBELIH,” said Cathy Demeroto, Executive Director of CAST. “Opening our food pantry to patients experiencing food insecurity helps us advocate for even more Southold Town residents.”
Nutrition plays a major role in a patient’s post-hospitalization care plan, and this food-as-medicine program will reduce further health difficulties and assist SBELIH’s patients in living a more supported life.
