Pressure injuries, sometimes called bedsores, are areas of skin that become damaged when too much pressure is placed on the skin for a long time. This pressure can slow down blood flow, which can hurt the skin and the tissue underneath it. Pressure injuries often form on bony areas of the body, such as the heels, hips, tailbone, elbows, and ankles.

Pressure injuries can be mild or more serious, depending on how deep the damage goes. People who cannot move easily, stay in bed or a wheelchair for long periods, or have trouble feeling pain are more likely to get pressure injuries. Moist skin, poor nutrition, and certain health problems can also increase the risk.

Preventing pressure injuries is very important. Ways to help prevent them include changing positions often, keeping skin clean and dry, using special mattresses or cushions, eating healthy foods, and checking the skin every day. Finding pressure injuries early helps stop them from getting worse.

Our hospital staff work together to check each patient’s risk and create a care plan to help protect the skin and support healing.
