Hospital-Acquired Conditions (HACs)

Hospital-Acquired Conditions, also called HACs, are preventable medical problems, infections, or complications that can happen during a hospital stay and were not present when a patient was admitted. Examples include pressure ulcers (bed sores), falls, foreign objects left after surgery, and serious infections.

These conditions are tracked by organizations such as the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) because they can signal concerns with patient safety and quality of care. Hospital-acquired conditions can lead to longer hospital stays, serious injury, or worse outcomes.
