Position Description

Utilizes the nursing process in diagnosing and treating human responses to actual or potential health problems through such services as case finding, health teaching, health counseling and provisions of care supportive to or restorative of life and well-being.  Execution of the medical regimens prescribed by a licensed physician or dentist authorized to practice at ELIH.

The Registered Professional Nurse will be responsible for the care of patients ranging in age from one (1) year and beyond from admission to discharge.  Specific duties will include the general history and physical assessment of the patient upon admission.  The Registered Professional Nurse will be responsible for good charting practices, maintaining nursing care plans, administering prescribed medications and treatments and teaching patient/significant others about health related needs. The Registered Professional Nurse is a liaison between patient and doctor which may include family members.  The Registered Professional Nurse is a preceptor for orientation of new personnel.

Experience

One (1) year Med/Surg Hospital Experience required. Two (2) year  Addiction Services/Med/Surg Nursing Experience preferred.

Qualifications

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.  Bachelor's of Science in nursing preferred.  Licensed and currently registered as a professional nurse New York State. Acute care experience mandatory.   Basic Life Support ("BLS") and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support ("ACLS") certification required.  Able to work effectively with others and delegate responsibility to allied nursing personnel.  Demonstrates appropriate oral and written communication skills.  Demonstrates a commitment to continued professional development.

Physical Demands

 

Must be able to lift or assist in lifting a client from bed to chair to standing or vice versa.  Must be able to respond quickly and effectively communicate orally in an emergent situation.  Must be able to use stairs in an emergent situation.  Must be able to walk, carry semi-heavy equipment and reach overhead.  Must be able to communicate orally and in writing with clients or associates.
